I’m Charlie Freer, originally from Cleveland, and sports have been at the center of my life for as long as I can remember. Whether playing, filming, or just watching, I’ve always been drawn to the energy and community they create.
I first picked up a camera in high school, and what started as experimenting with sports photography and video quickly became something I wanted to keep pursuing. I realized I loved finding the moments most people overlook: the emotion, the energy, the little details that tell the bigger story.
At John Carroll, I played lacrosse before transitioning into filming one of my favorite sports. With the sports information department and the Gridiron Club, I filmed football, basketball, and lacrosse — not just the games, but the full season experience. I traveled with the teams, captured locker room speeches, behind-the-scenes moments, and even produced advertising videos to help raise money for the programs. What I enjoyed most was getting to know the athletes on a personal level, not just as players on the field. Building those relationships and documenting their journey made every project more meaningful, and it showed me how powerful storytelling can be when it connects with people.
Now, as I head to Ohio State, I’m excited to step into a new atmosphere, meet new people, and keep pushing myself to learn and grow.
What drives me is the process. I enjoy the whole arc: setting up to shoot, capturing raw moments, then piecing it together into something that feels alive. To me, it’s more than highlights; it’s about showing the personality of the team, the spirit of the game, and the moments people will want to look back on years later.
Sports have always been a big part of my life, and videography has become the way I continue to be part of it by creating something lasting and meaningful.
